Brockton, ON, February 15, 2019 –The public is invited to celebrate the grand opening of Walkerton’s refurbished ice pad in the former Horse Palace with a ribbon cutting and free skate at 1:00 p.m. on Family Day, February 18, 2019.
There will be remarks from provincial and municipal representatives, and from the Twice the Ice fundraising committee, which spearheaded the project. The rink will also be officially renamed the Power Workers Union Centre for the union’s contribution to the upgrade.
“This has been a fantastic community project to allow a second ice pad in Brockton for people to use,” said Greg Bester, chairman of Twice the Ice. The temporary ice surface is run by volunteers and is open from November to March. It’s used by the Walkerton Minor Hockey Association and other community groups, serving more than 800 skaters a year during prime hours, when the Walkerton Community Centre is at full capacity.
Refurbishing the ice plant has ensured that local families will not have to travel elsewhere for ice time. “It is expensive for people to travel out of town for ice and it can really add to the cost of playing hockey,” Bester said. “If you’d like to donate, contact us on our Facebook page, Twice the Ice.”
The Family Day event will take place at 290 Durham St. West, and hot chocolate, coffee and popcorn will be available.
