(SOUTH BRUCE, ON) - The annual March Break Distracted Driving campaign has come to an end. Members of South Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were highly visible on local roads and highways for the 7-day campaign, which ran from Monday, March 11th to Sunday, March 17th.
South Bruce OPP members laid a total of 59 traffic-related charges during the initiative. Some of the offences included: Speeding, Racing, Impaired Driving and Distracted Driving.
South Bruce OPP also investigated a total of 9 collisions during the distracted driving campaign. 3 of these collisions involved a vehicle hitting a deer. None of the 9 investigated collisions appeared to be a result of distracted driving.
Province-wide, the deaths of 55 people and more than 9,115 collisions were linked to an inattentive driver on OPP Patrolled roads in 2018. The OPP laid 13,529 Distracted Driving charges last year against drivers who chose to make roads unsafe by dividing their attention between driving and using a hand-held device.
The South Bruce OPP would like to thank the citizens who make a difference in our community every day by not driving while distracted.
