Spike Belt Used To Stop Drunk Driver

(FOURNIER TOWNSHIP, ON) – Police arrested and charged a driver for impaired driving, dangerous driving, flight from police, and domestic mischief after responding to a 9-1-1 call.

On April 9, 2024, shortly after 11:30 p.m., the James Bay Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a 9-1-1 call of a domestic disturbance at a residence on Fear Road, in Fournier Township, west of the Town of Cochrane.

As police were responding to the call, they observed a vehicle driving at a high rate of speed in a dangerous manner on Fear Road. Police followed the vehicle west bound onto Highway 11, and a Tire Deflation Device (TDD), otherwise known as a Spike Belt was successfully utilized, however the vehicle continued west bound on Highway 11.

The vehicle was safely brought to a stop in Calder Township, the driver was arrested, and it was determined that they had been consuming an alcoholic beverage. The driver was then transported to the Cochrane detachment for further testing.

As a result of the investigation a 46-year-old person from Cochrane, was charged with:

Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs
Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
Flight from a peace officer
Domestic Mischief
The accused was released and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in May 2024, in Cochrane. The accused was also issued a 90-day Administrative Drivers Licence Suspension (ADLS), and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.
