Providing a fake name turned a traffic ticket into a criminal charge for a Guelph man Monday.

Just after 10 a.m. a member of the Guelph Police Service Traffic Unit was patrolling on Eramosa Road. When he pulled behind a grey SUV, the driver abruptly turned into a commercial plaza and went into a business.

The officer spoke to the driver when he left the business and the male provided a name later determined to be false. The officer was eventually able to learn the driver’s true identity and that he is a suspended driver.

A 38-year-old Guelph man is charged with obstructing police and driving while suspended. He will appear in court June 18.

Church volunteer had wallet stolen
A Guelph woman faces several charges after another woman had her wallet stolen while volunteering at a downtown church.

On January 7, the victim noticed her wallet missing after she finished her volunteer shift. She checked her online banking and noticed her debit and credit cards had been used to make several purchases at various businesses throughout downtown.

A suspect was caught on video using the cards at two of the businesses. On Monday she was located downtown and arrested. A 59-year-old Guelph woman is charged with eight counts of unauthorized use of a credit card, two counts of possessing a credit card and two counts of breaching probation.
