A Guelph man has been arrested in connection with two recent break-ins in the same north-end neighborhood.

Just before 10 a.m. last Friday, police were called to an address on Woolwich Street near Division Street. The owner said she had placed her car keys on a table near the front door the previous evening, and when she woke the keys and her car were missing.

A neighbour provided security video which showed a male approaching the victims house and then a short time later the vehicle being reversed from the driveway. During the investigation it was learned the car had been involved in a collision just outside the city. A witness had given the driver a lift back into Guelph.

On Monday police were called to a home in the same neighbourhood where the owner reported his shed had been entered and two e-bikes were stolen.

The Guelph Police Service Break Enter Auto Theft Unit took over both investigations and were able to identify a suspect. On Wednesday a warrant was executed at an apartment close to both crime scenes and a 35-year-old Guelph man was arrested.

He is charged with two counts of break and enter, theft of motor vehicle, possessing stolen property under $5,000 and driving while suspended. He was held for a bail hearing Thursday.

E-bike stolen from business
The Guelph Police Service is investigating after a costly e-bike was stolen during a break-in at a downtown business.

Approximately 10 p.m. Wednesday police received a call from the owner of a Wyndham Street North business, who had received a notification of a break-in. Security video showed a male gaining access by breaking a window on a back door.

He was inside for less than 30 seconds and stole a grey Trek Allant+ 7 e-bike valued at $4,500. He was wearing a long grey coat with the hood up, green or black pants, a black backpack and gloves.

Driver rams cruiser and flees
The Guelph Police Service is investigating after the driver of a pick-up rammed a police cruiser and fled Wednesday afternoon.

Shortly after noon, an officer was patrolling on Woolwich Street when the cruisers automated licence plate reader (ALPR) flagged a vehicle associated to a suspended driver. The officer attempted to pull over the black GMC Sierra pick-up as it entered the East Parkade on Macdonell Street.

A male passenger exited the truck and fled on foot. The driver intentionally reversed into the cruiser, causing minor damage, before fleeing the area. He also caused damage to the parkade entrance arms. The truck was not pursued in the interest of public safety. The driver was described as a light-skinned black male wearing a brown coat and blue medical mask.

Vacant nursing home entered
The Guelph Police Service is investigating after a break-in at a vacant nursing home this week.

Just before 9 a.m. Wednesday, police were called to an address near Metcalfe Street and Speedvale Avenue East after the owner arrived and discovered damage inside.

Investigation revealed unknown suspects had entered the building sometime overnight by prying open a door leading to the basement. Several interior doors were also damaged and security cameras either damaged or removed entirely. A quantity of cash was stolen from a safe in the office area.

Anyone with information is asked to call Constable Cameron Keddie at 519-824-1212, ext. 7431, email [email protected], leave an anonymous message for Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS ((8477) or leave an anonymous tip online at www.csgw.tips.
