Repeat Offender Arrested Again: WATSON-MCCOY
Source: Sarnia Police ServiceDate: Tue Feb 18 05:38:48 MST 2025
On February 15, 2025 at 7:30am, an officer in the area of Devine Street and Brock Street South observed a male cyclist traveling southbound on the snow-covered roadway, against the flow of traffic.
The officer activated his emergency lights and stopped the cyclist to speak with him through the cruiser passenger window. The male cyclist suddenly attempted to pedal away but the officer repositioned his vehicle to prevent him moving forward.
He then ran across a snowbank to the sidewalk with his bicycle and attempted to pedal away from the officer again. The officer exited his vehicle and gave chase to the male on foot, quickly catching up and placing him under arrest. The male began to fight with the officer, and during the struggle, the officer observed a firearm fall from the males person onto the ground.
The officer immediately disengaged and deployed his Conducted Energy Weapon (CEW). The deployment was partially effective however, the male continued to resist violently. Physical strikes were necessary to restrain the male until additional units arrived. The male was securely taken into custody.
A search of his person revealed two large knives that were readily accessible in the waistband of his pants. In addition, a small bag containing fentanyl was located. The firearm that fell was determined to be a replica (BB gun). At the time of his arrest, the male was subject to a court ordered firearms prohibition, was wanted on SPS warrants, and subject to a Recognizance of Bail for earlier (similar) offences.
As a result of this incident, Grant WATSON-MCCOY 29 years of no fixed address (Sarnia) was held for bail on the following charges:
Assaulting a police officer
Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose x3
Carry a concealed weapon X3
Possession of a firearm contrary to a prohibition order
Fail to comply with a release order
Possession of a schedule I drug (fentanyl)
WATSON-MCCOY was transported by ambulance to hospital. He was treated for injuries and released. The officers were not injured.
The presence of these concealed weapons in this incident could easily have resulted in a very different and tragic outcome. The investigating and backup officers did an exceptional job of quickly bringing this person into custody, despite the violent resistance they faced. I am relieved that no officers were injured and commend them for their actions. Chief Derek Davis
