(NOELVILLE, ON) One person was injured from a snowmobile collision on the French River.
On March 10, 2025, at approximately 3:45 a.m., the Nipissing West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Fire Services and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded to a single snowmobile collision on the French River, near the end of Meilleur Road, Noelville.
A 54-year-old-person from Noelville was transported by Air ORNGE with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries to a local hospital.
The OPP reminds all snowmobilers to stay safe when riding on frozen lakes and rivers, especially at night. Ice conditions can be unpredictable and dangerous, increasing the risk of accidents, submersion, and hypothermia.
Safety Tips for Nighttime Snowmobiling on Ice:
Check Ice Conditions Ice thickness and strength can change quickly. Always check with local authorities or ice fishing operators before riding.
Avoid Unknown Areas Stay on marked and known trails. Avoid pressure cracks, open water, or slush-covered ice.
Never Ride Alone Always snowmobile with a friend and let someone know your route and expected return time.
Wear Proper Gear A buoyant snowmobile suit and a helmet with a clear visor can save your life in case of an accident.
Slow Down and Stay Alert Reduced visibility at night makes it harder to spot hazards like ice ridges, obstacles, or thin ice.
Carry Emergency Equipment Ice picks, a whistle, a flashlight, and a fully charged cellphone in a waterproof case can make all the difference in an emergency.
Never Ride Impaired Alcohol and drugs impair judgment and reaction time, increasing the risk of tragedy.
Remember: No ice is 100% safe. If in doubt, stay off the ice! Ride smart, ride safe, and make it home safely.
